DW Life > 58 D I V E R S I T Y W O M A N Winter 2016 d i v e r s i t y w o m a n . c o m Although much depends on the nature of the trip, it's important to set some ba- sic ground rules. First, keep shoptalk to a minimum. "You might want to talk about who you wish you could vote of the is- land, but you don't want to sour other relationships in the ofce," says Natalie Holder, an employment lawyer and cor- porate trainer. "Use discretion. Always think about how your actions are going to land with someone." You also may not want to broadcast in the workplace that you went away with your ofce BFFs, which might alienate others. If you're a supervisor and you're on a nonbusiness trip with employees who re- port to you, it can be tricky. "I wouldn't recommend it," Holder advises. "Te optics—favoritism, favoritism, favorit- ism—are glaring. You may lose credibil- ity in the eyes of your team, which can crush ofce morale." To play it safe, and to make life less complicated, you might want to travel only with industry pros from outside your ofce. Either way, do get to know one another. "Women tend to show one side or the other, especially around those they work with," says Darnyelle Jervey, CEO of Incredible One Enterprises, a business-consulting frm. "While you're traveling, show your vulnerable side, be honest, let your hair down," In general, getaways with the girls ofer fabulous per- sonal benefts. "You pull the viewfnder back and look at your life and challenges from a diferent angle. Pull- ing yourself away from your crushing responsibilities and traveling with other women can be a life-changing expe- rience, and a heck of a won- derful time," says Caprino. If that's not enough mo- tivation to get you going, here are some places too tempting for you and your friends to pass up. Jekyll Island, Georgia Jekyll Island lies along the Atlantic coast- line midway between Savannah, Geor- gia, and Jacksonville, Florida. A girls' getaway package is available year-round. Wander Driftwood Beach, take a paddle- board out on the Atlantic, kayak through the marshes of the Golden Isles, take a shrimp boat excursion, or go deep-sea fshing. Tere are four golf courses and 20 miles of bike paths. Play tennis, bird- watch, or simply soak up the sun on the beach. jekyllisland.com La Fortuna de San Carlos, Costa Rica Location is everything. Tabacón Grand Spa Termal Resort is spread across 900 acres of lush natural reserve near the majestic Arenal Volcano National Park. Whether your group is into adventure and will seek out the zip lining and white- water rafting, or will instead opt for the serenity the natural mineral springs of- fers, there's something to make everybody smile. Tabacón boasts an open-air spa where guests take therapies in bunga- lows tucked away in a rain forest and a restaurant serving international cuisines that overlooks a waterfall. And if you feel like you want some time away from the group, you can head for the adults-only Shangri-La Gardens, where you can re- lax in a private cabana, have a cocktail, or fnd your own hot mineral spring. tabacon.com Santa Fe, New Mexico Santa Fe earns kudos as No. 1 for Best Girls' Trip by USA Today readers and is on many women's bucket lists.
