d i v e r s i t y w o m a n . c o m W i n t e r 2 0 1 6 D I V E R S I T Y W O M A N 61 DW Life > Los Angeles Stepping Out By Eddie Lee F ew places in the world can match the bustle and excitement of Los Angeles. While the presence of Holly- wood has rightly earned LA the nickname the Entertainment Capital of the World, the city's many neighborhoods and rich diversity mean there's much more to do than visit Grauman's Chinese Teatre or follow a movie star map. One of LA's must-see locations is the Getty Center. Located in the Brentwood neighborhood, the center houses impor- tant works from history's preeminent artists, including Monet, Picasso, and Rembrandt. Te campus itself features striking modern architecture, pictur- esque gardens, and spectacular views of Los Angeles. Te newest addition to the LA museum scene is the the Broad, which opened downtown this past September. It boasts more than 2,000 works of con- temporary art, housed in its expansive three-story building. Te good news for visitors is that admission to this stunning museum is free and advance reservation tickets are available online; the bad news is that tickets have been going fast, so be sure to get them early. If you want to see even more art, be sure to visit the Los Angeles County Mu- seum of Art. With an eclectic collection of over 120,000 objects that span all times and cultures, it is the largest art museum in the western United States. One of its best-known (and most Instagrammed) displays is Urban Light, an outdoor art installation consisting of 202 restored antique cast-iron streetlamps. Another popular destination for both locals and tourists is Grifth Observa- tory, a free-of-charge facility featuring a wide range of astronomy-related dis- plays. If you are more of a sightseer than a scientist, the real gem of the observa- tory may be the view. Located on Mount Hollywood in Grifth Park, the obser- vatory ofers sweeping vistas of the Los Angeles basin. Grifth Park is also a great place for outdoor activities, with numer- ous hiking trails snaking throughout the hills, including several that lead to the fa- mous Hollywood sign. If you'd like to do some shopping, you don't have to break the bank on Rodeo Drive. Located in the Fairfax District, the Grove is a popular destination, especially on a nice day or evening when shoppers can enjoy the outdoor mall and the adjacent farmers' market. Book and music enthu- siasts should be sure to hit the Last Book- store in downtown LA, one of the largest independent bookstores in the world. After seeing all the sights and attrac- tions of Los Angeles, you're bound to have worked up an appetite, and LA's food scene is absolutely endless. For fne din- ing, Providence is one of the top restau- rants not just in Los Angeles but in the en- tire country. Boasting two Michelin stars, this Hollywood des- tination is commit- ted to serving only the fnest sustain- able seafood. Meanwhile, Bottega Louie in downtown LA is a favorite place for a meal anytime of the day. Don't leave without trying one of its decadent desserts, includ- ing a wide selection of macarons. One of the hottest restaurants at the moment is Cassia in Santa Monica. Run by two husband-wife duos, it ofers fare infuenced by the kitchens of Southeast Asia and uses ingredients sourced from local farmers. With the restaurant receiv- ing rave reviews, you'll defnitely need to secure a reservation. If you want to es- cape the city and slow things down a bit, take a drive up the Pacifc Coast Highway to Malibu, where you'll fnd Geofrey's Malibu. With delicious seafood and a lo- cation right on the ocean, it is the perfect place to kick back and enjoy the Califor- nia surf. After a long day exploring the city, you'll want to end it with an equally exciting night. Start of at High Rooftop Lounge in Venice, which overlooks the beach. Te best time to come is in the early evening when you can enjoy an unmatched sunset view. Afterward, make your way over to the Bar and Lounge at Hotel Bel-Air. With a creative cocktail menu, an elegant ambi- ence, and live music nightly, it's the per- fect place to cap of your time in LA.
