Publisher's Page > A Ripe Time for Women Leaders O ne of my inspirations for launching the Diversity Woman brand in 2005 was that, as a woman of color, I found it almost impossible to access leadership development opportunities. I had recently been displaced from a Fortune 500 company that had supported leadership development, which, as I soon discovered, wasn't typical. Flash forward seven years. In your hands you have the Fall 2012 issue of Diversity Woman, which includes our first annual "100 Best Companies for Leadership and Executive Development for Women." Believe me, it was not easy narrowing this list to 100! Companies are finally taking leadership development for women seriously. We have a ways to go, but we're moving in the right direction. I feel proud and honored to say that Companies are ëQDOO\ WDNLQJ leadership development for women seriously. Diversity Woman has been part of that change. Our goal is to promote leadership and executive development for women at our conferences, in our magazine, and on our digital properties. (If you haven't already, sign up for our e-newsletter at www.diversitywoman.com.) Tere is no better place to start than this impres- sive list of the 100 best companies. You'll read about such inspirational leaders as Mariela Ure, the SVP of Hispanic Seg- ment Strategy at Wells Fargo, and Debbie Ballard, Vice President of Global Shared Services at McDonald's. How's this for inspirational? You will also become immersed in the life story of broadcast journalist Soledad O'Brien, our cover subject (page 53). She is the perfect embodiment of both diversity and leader- ship. Born to an Australian-Irish father and a Cuban mother of African descent, she has been "claimed" by many ethnic groups—and she embraces her woman-of- the-world status by giving back to each of these communities. Elsewhere in this issue, you'll find a great deal of news and information you can use. Are you ready to manage four or five generations of workers? In today's economy, you very well might need to be. In "Take the Lead" (page 29), writer Kim- berly Olson explains how top leaders are incorporating multiple generations into the workplace. Do you find it difficult to negotiate sal- ary? Most women do. We tend to be more reluctant than men to tout our accomplish- ments and ask for what we are worth. On page 33, Ellen Lee provides tips on negoti- ating the salary you want. Diversity Woman plans to be at the fore- front of the movement to develop more women leaders and executives. Ongoing, this magazine will focus directly on leader- ship development, giving you ideas, solu- tions, and resources to help you advance in your career. Enjoy!
